Wheat stock to touch 78 LT by April next year

NEW DELHI: (PTI) The country's wheat stock is estimated to nearly double the buffer limit of 40 lakh tons by April next year, while that of rice is likely to rise by 20 per cent of buffer norms by October this year.

"It is estimated that the stock of wheat as on 1-4-2009 will be higher at 78.60 lakh tons compared to the buffer norms of 40.00 lakh tons," an official statement said on Friday.

Similarly, rice stock will be 62.43 lakh tons as on 1-10-2008, against the buffer norm of 52 lakh tons, the statement said.

The procurement of rice as on August 18 stood at 266.80 lakh tons against the overall procurement of 251.07 lakh tons in the entire kharif seson last year, it said.

The government has made an ad-hoc allocation of about 96,500 tons of wheat under the APL category to various states for the period between July and September in a bid to cater for demand in the festive season and keep prices under check.

The Centre has also announced release of 5 lakh tons of sugar over and above the regular release of 9 lakh tons in the open market in August and September, along with the release of 20 lakh tons of dismantled buffer stock by September 2008.

Under the scheme for distribution of subsidised edible oils, 1.69 lakh tons of edible oils have already landed in the country as on August 18 and about 69,000 tons have so far been distributed to various states by central PSUs.

So far, 24 States have been allocated 93,400 metric tons of edible oils per month for distribution through ration shops. Andhra Pradesh, Chhatisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Gujrat, Maharashtra, Orissa and Tamil Nadu have started distributing edible oils.(PTI)
