Govt targets to produce 78.50 MT wheat production

New Delhi (PTI): Amid good supply of seed and better monsoon, the government hopes to harvest 78.50 million tonnes of wheat this year, a million tonnes more than the previous year.
The government has released the agenda for Rabi conference to be held during September 24-25, where it has announced the target production for wheat and other rabi crops.
Production of wheat, which is the major Rabi crop accounting for nearly 72 per cent of total foodgrain production in the country, is estimated to be 78.40 MT in 2007-08 season.
The target for rice production is set at 14 MT, jowar at 3.9 MT and barely at 1.5 MT.
However, the exact target would be decided after taking views from the state government officials, who are expected to attend the two-day conference, a senior government official said.
The good rainfall during June-September has provided hope for better harvest of Rabi crops as there would not be problems in availability of water, the official added.
According to an estimate, the Agriculture Ministry hopes that the availability of seeds for wheat cultivation would be more than 38 per cent at 8.76 lakh tonnes than the required demand.
Due to decline in soil fertility and high yields in Punjab and Haryana, the Centre has said timely sowing of wheat and location specific high yielding varieties would overcome the problem of stagnating productivity.
"Ensuring timely and adequate availability of certified and quality seeds of location specific high yielding varieties in wheat growing areas" will be helpful in increasing wheat yeilds in the country, the official said. (PTI)
